Our Media Center’s extensive collection of materials offers a variety of experiences for the
students. We have 26 networked student computer stations and 3 networked teacher computer
stations. All of the networked computers have Internet and email access, as well as a
variety of programs for student use.
We operate on a flexible schedule which allows entire classes, small groups or
individuals to use the facility at any time. There are various areas for large and small groups.
Younger students enjoy visiting our castle area for reading and selecting books.
There is a cozy couch for reading in the magazine area. A storybook-like mural graces another area, often used for stations. In the stations area students can use Leap Pads, Quantum Pads, TV/VCR, Geo
Safari Talking Globe, 20Q and Phonics Lab. We also have a variety of Twist & Shouts for students to use.
Other student activities range from playing educational board games, to our
weekly fun research contest called InfoQuest. Students can take an Accelerated Reader test, vote on a Kentucky Bluegrass Award
book and, of course, check out books!

8 Book Fair
We have two student book fairs a year. The first one is in the fall during the week of Open House. There is a special Parent’s night the night of Open House. The second book fair is the week of Pizza and Pages, in the spring. Parent’s night is the night of Pizza & Pages.
8 Hot Dogs With Harry
This fun event is for Intermediate (Grades 3-5) students and their parents. It is loosely themed around the popular Harry Potter books. When entering the building families are greeted by our very own Dumbledore
(Principal Rob Carroll in costume) and they proceed to the Great Hall for
dinner. Afterwards, science experiments are performed by the Henderson County High
School AP Chemistry students. There is an animal demonstration in the PIT area of the Media Center by the
Audubon Park naturalist. Other craft stations are set up each year and there is
a fortune teller booth. There are also fun prizes!
8 Pizza & Pages
This literacy program is for Primary (Grades PreK-2) students and their parents.
As they enter the building, Pizza Pat (our favorite chef Carroll) greets them
and directs them to the café where they dine on – what else?…PIZZA! After dinner, everyone proceeds to the Media Center, where a variety of stations
are set up. Volunteer “waiters” read a story at each station and help the families with a related craft. The Book Fair is open for shopping and some lucky students win door prizes!
8 Dr. Seuss’ Birthday
This event is held each year in March. We prepare a skit based on one of Dr. Seuss’ books and staff members act it out for the students.
8 Author Visits
Many authors have visited South Heights. Their visits are always much
anticipated and enjoyed. Authors who have visited include: Paul Brett Johnson, Debbie Dadey, Mary Ann
McCabe Reihle, April Pulley Sayre, Melissa Burton and Leigh Anne Florence. We’ll keep you posted on who is coming next!
8 Summer Fun in the LMC
Our LMC has been open during the summer for the past few years. Students can come in and use computers, do station activities, play games or
read books and magazines. Students who visit the LMC during the summer or who visit the public library are
invited to a special Hard Work Café when school starts.

Technology is a big part of our school! We have 6-8 computers in every classroom. Each classroom has an AverKey to connect the computer and TV for whole group
instruction. Just off of the Media Center is a mini computer lab, which is used
for extra station work during Project CHILD rotations.
We have two computer labs with thirty computers each. Both have daily classes,
with “Cape Tech” focusing on Headsprout and “Tech Harbor” focusing on Compass Learning. Both labs are used during “MAP” (Measures of Academic Progress) testing.
Every computer has word processing software, Internet and email access. A package of curriculum software is also provided for every Project CHILD
classroom. We have several digital cameras available for checkout. There are digital video projectors and Smart Boards in the computer labs, music
room and TEACH model room.
