Several years ago, South Heights began a journey to improve the behavior at our school in a positive way.  We joined a state initiative called the K.I.D.S. Project.  It was a three year venture in which we developed our own plan based on teaching expectations and positive interactions.  The KIDS team was developed with members that represented various areas of the school.  They attended several trainings a year, and developed lesson plans for every aspect of the day. We have procedures for our common areas, a common language and a common set of expectations.  We evaluate and adapt our plan as the need arises.  Classroom Discipline is focused around the CHAMPS program by Randall Sprick.  It also relies on teaching the expected behaviors, so that students know what they are supposed to do.

ACE Room
ACE (Alternative Classroom Environment) Room is a place where students may go to when they have received a discipline referral, or sometimes they just need a place to calm down.  In this room, they do their class work for a period of the day, or occasionally for the entire day.  The focus is always on doing the right thing and exhibiting Champ behavior.

The Admiral’s Club
This club was created to show appreciation to those students who come to school every day and do not have any behavioral problems.  Each homeroom teacher chooses two students per week to be selected.  These selected students will receive a certificate of appreciation, a sucker and get to spend about 15 minutes with an adult mentor as a way of saying thank you to that student.  We are hoping that everyone will be a member of the Admiral’s Club by the end of the school year. The goal of the Admiral’s Club is to encourage positive behavior and perfect attendance.

S.T.A.R. Program
The Striving Toward Achievement and Responsibility (S.T.A.R.) program focuses on working with those students who have exhibited the need for some extra work in the areas of social skills, problem solving, anger management, teamwork, responsibility, etc. The Star counselor meets with weekly groups and other students as needed during a school year. Teachers and guidance counselors recommend those students who may benefit from this program.  The S.T.A.R. Project Coordinator conducts supportive groups three times weekly, meets individually to set goals with each student and works with each student individually on an as needed basis to help make that student successful.  The S.T.A.R. program focuses as an area of prevention for those students who may be considered at-risk.  The S.T.A.R. program also collaborates with the U.K. Cooperative Extension Office through the 4-H program to get these targeted students involved in productive after school activities.

SST PROGRAM
The Student Success Team (SST) is a grant funded through the Department of Juvenile Justice. SST will serve students attending South Heights Elementary, Jefferson Elementary, North Middle and South Middle Schools. Ten students will be targeted at each school. Parental permission must be given to participate in SST. SST focuses on students who have truancy problems and academic concerns. The students identified to participate in this program will have weekly contact with a social worker to help them work toward perfect attendance and receiving improved grades. Incentives will be offered to create improvements in these areas. Also monthly parent meetings and events will be scheduled to encourage the parents’ assistance for further accomplishments with their child. The social worker, student and parents will maintain weekly rapport to discuss the progress of the student. The students will participate in individual and group counseling on a weekly basis. The social worker will stay in contact with parents regularly through phone calls, home visits, individual conferences and parent group meetings. SST will also offer four family events per school year.

South Heights Special Education program offers both resource and collaboration. Students are sometimes brought to the special ed resource rooms for small group and individual instruction. Special Ed teachers also teach collaboratively with the regular classroom teachers, to offer accommodations for the student who need it. Students go through a thorough testing process for special ed and are place according to Kentucky guidelines. Some of the specific learning disabilities we work with are EBD (Emotional Behavior Disorder), MMD (Mild Mental Disability), other health impaired, visually impaired, developmentally delayed, and speech. All students in Special Ed have an IEP.

The TEACCH classroom at South Heights offers a different approach to education for students with special needs. The class offers a highly structured program which revolves around visual schedules, structured classroom environment, visual task, and varied instructional styles. Throughout the school day, students follow a visual schedule prompting them where to be and what to work on at any given time. While in the TEACCH classroom, students spend some time in their individual work areas developing independent work skills. Individual work utilizes visual structure which enables students to look at the task and know the steps necessary to complete each job. Students also participate in small group instruction, one-to-one teacher directed instruction and computer assisted instruction. Learner styles are addressed through a variety of activities employing pencil and paper, manipulatives, drill and practice, discussion, role playing, fine motor and gross motor movement.

The mission of South Heights Family Resource Center is to remove the barriers that prevent children from learning and reaching their full potential.  Most often removing those barriers involves filling needs that involve the entire family.  Whether your child needs school supplies, clothes, or just a little tender loving care, we are here.  Services offered include:  service learning projects, child care, literacy programs, adult education referrals, health services and referrals, parent and child education and referrals, attendance monitoring and assistance, instructional behavior assistance, home visits and other services as deemed necessary.

The FRC will be offering the Weekend Backpack Program to help meet the needs of our less fortunate student population. The program will be a joint effort between the FRC and several local churches. Identified students will be provided with a backpack each Friday afternoon containing nutritious snacks to supplement their food source over the weekend when school breakfast and lunch are not available. The program is intended to be a nutrition-based supplemental food sup-ply to help ensure that students that may not have enough food in their homes will not have to go hungry over the weekend.

South Heights FRC collaborates with all local assistance agencies to provide needed services for our families.  We also collaborate with school system based programs such as our media center, Even Start, Pre-School and Head Start.

Our Family Resource Center is open each weekday from 7:00 A.M. until 3:00 P.M., with other hours by appointment if necessary.

A new component to the South Heights reading program is the Language Lab.  It uses a research-based program by Lindamood-Bell Literacy.
There are three components of this program: Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing (LiPs), Seeing Stars and Visualizing and Verbalizing. Using a rotating schedule, all Kindergarten students will be serviced. In addition, identified 1st- 5th graders will be served on a remediation basis. The instructional process is active and discovery based, using direct student-teacher interaction. LiPs creates interest in, and curiosity about sounds. Seeing Stars is an integrated reading and spelling program. Visualizing and Verbalizing targets language comprehension and critical thinking skills.

MATH GRANT
South Heights is thrilled to have been chosen as a recipient of the Math Achievement Fund grant. This is a competitive grant that was proposed by the Kentucky Center of Mathematics in order to help increase student achievement in the area of math. Using a rotating schedule, first and second graders who struggle in the area of mathematics will receive math intervention daily using a research-based curriculum call Number Worlds. Number Worlds is an intensive intervention program that focuses on fun activities that build foundational math skills and prepare younger children to understand more complex concepts later. Students will use hands-on activities and technology in order to maximize their understanding of early mathematical concepts.
